During the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 8, approximately 29 panes of glass were individually punched out in an act of vandalism at the Delta Upsilon Fraternity house.
“The damage was pretty extensive,” said DU President Alex Ryan-Bond ’07. “There was broken glass all over the basement. It looked like the windows were kicked in or were hit with something — someone did it on purpose.”
According to Director of Public Safety Owen Redgrave, a student filed a report with Public Safety in response to the incident, though it is still under investigation.
Director of Maintenance Ralph Thayer said that the total cost for repairing the windows will be about $2,100.
The work of replacing the windowpanes is labor intensive due to nature of the window frames and the need for each pane to be installed individually, according to Facilities Director Bill Maguire. The labor required is the primary contributor to the high cost of repair.
“The majority of the windows have been fixed — about eight to 10 windows are being fixed per day,” Maguire said.
Ryan-Bond said that the primary reaction of the DU brothers to the incident was one of frustration. “This is very frustrating for us — it’s our house and we’ve been making a conscious effort to fix it up,” Ryan-Bond said. “We are going to look into making the house more secure.”
According to Dean of Student Life Myrt Westphal, the DU leadership has brought a suspect to the college’s attention. Possible punishments in this instance could involve a College Judiciary Committee or a Dean’s hearing, though there could also be a plea bargain depending on the circumstances.
“Our goal is for people to take responsibility and pay for their damage,” Westphal said. “If people come forward and admit guilt, they don’t get the book thrown in. The circumstances always get taken into account — our goal is never punishment, it is responsibility.”
